Avatar: Two Brothers
Chapter 22
Northern Water Tribe
The Northern Water Tribe had always been well known for being the stronger of the water tribes. Not only were they vast in numbers, they were also well trained and had high instances of development compared to their counterpart tribe. Even their icy structures were far advanced and aesthetically pleasing compared to the south.
It was here that a teenage boy named Dilraj was on watchtower duty, searching for any suspicious activity that could be a threat to the tribe. Almost halfway into his shift, he spotted a boat that docked near their shores. He saw a boy, similar age to him hop out of the boat with two girls still on the boat, both still asleep.
Not knowing what to make of the strangers, he called for one of the nearby post guards to alert the chieftain. His fellow guard rushed towards the chieftain while Dilraj stayed to keep an eye on the visitors.
As Da-Wei had gotten off the boat, the man threw both Chloe and Isabelle onto the icy floor.
“This is as far as I’m taking you. Good luck finding a cure for your friend.”
As the man was about to leave, Da-Wei had mixed feelings about his departure. On one hand this man didn’t seem very caring but on the other, he did get all three of them to the Northern Water Tribe.
“Hey before you go, what is your name?”
The man paused before saying, “You can call me Rice.”
“Thanks for everything, teacher Rice.”
“Ha, I didn't think I would ever be called a teacher again. Don’t get yourself killed, kid.” After those words, he left on his boat and disappeared into the vast waters.
Shortly after, Isabelle began to wake up. She felt some pain on her back but she was also shocked to see her surroundings change from the bog, to freezing temperature and ice everywhere.
Da-Wei took his time to explain to Isabelle what had happened after her body gave out. She was excited to find out that they had arrived at the Northern Water Tribe but there was something very important. “Hey, where is Niall?”
Da-Wei looked around but could not find him. He was worried for a moment, but then he remembered seeing him on Rice’s shoulder before he left. “Don’t worry, he’s in a safe place.”
Isabelle accepted his answer and continued on. Her reaction came as a shock to him, thinking she might go crazy at him for losing a cute animal. Instead, they focused on the next important issue at hand. Keeping the avatar safe and getting Chloe to a healer.
“Okay I hate to complain but we got to do something about this baby here. I can’t carry him around all the time.”
“Why not?” Asked a clueless Da-Wei.
“One: If we ever get attacked, I won’t be able to fight back in time.
Two: It gets very tiring on my arms.
Three: It just looks weird!”
“Your first two points are valid, but I’m not sure about the last one. What do you mean it looks weird?”
“You know, a boy and a girl traveling around with a baby…”
“I don’t get it.”
“Sigh, nevermind. Let’s just figure out a solution!”
They both began thinking but it didn’t take long before Da-Wei found a solution. He looked over to where Chloe was lying and found a conveniently placed basket backpack near her. He figured that Rice was the one who left it behind for them.
He quickly got the basket backpack and tucked the avatar comfortable inside. For some reason, it felt a bit wrong to put an infant in this situation, but there wasn’t much choice. As they finished hiding the baby, a couple of men with water tribe armor appeared before them.
Between the two of them, one definitely had a more commanding presence about him, and he was the one that spoke up to Da-Wei and Isabelle. “Strangers, I do not wish to start a fight but you have landed on our territory unannounced. Speak your intentions or I, Chieftain Nacnud will have no choice but to assume you are both intruders.”
Seeing no reason to hide their intentions, Da-Wei shared with the chieftain that he and Isabelle had traveled to the Northern Water Tribe because their friend Chloe had been poisoned. He pointed to Chloe, who was lying on the ice as proof.
Chieftain Nacnud called for his comrade, Dilraj to check her vitals to verify if Da-Wei was speaking the truth. After doing a check on her breathing and pulse, Dilraj confirmed that Chloe was in critical condition and required medical attention.
“Very well, it seems you are speaking the truth. Dilraj, please show our guests some hospitality.” Dilraj acknowledged his chieftain’s orders and began to lead Da-Wei and Isabelle to where they were going to stay. However, Da-Wei was worried about Chloe but the Chieftain assured him that he would make sure she gets taken to a proper facility.
Nacnud carried Chloe off in a different direction while Da-Wei and Isabelle followed Dilraj into the icy palace. They were in complete marvel by the infrastructure of the place. How clean and clear everything seemed made mostly from ice.
When they finally reached their destination, Dilraj allowed each of them to enter their own separate room. After all they had been through sleeping out in the wild, they couldn’t have asked for a nicer place to stay. There was one catch however, neither of them were allowed to leave their room unless they were summoned by the chieftain.
Neither of them liked the idea of being confined to a room. It almost felt as if they were prisoners more than guests. But they were wise enough to comply with the order given by Dilraj. Any act of resistance could be seen as hostile, so they stayed in their rooms and rested hoping the chieftain would be able to meet with them soon.
