Chapter 25

War

After escaping from the Northern Water tribe, the benders were stuck on a boat together not knowing their next destination. Isabelle was still unconscious as there was an awkward silence among Da-Wei, Chloe, and Dilraj. Not wanting to create a big commotion, Chloe began whispering to Da-Wei.

“So, what are we going to do about him?”

“He’s a part of the team now.”

“You can’t be serious, how do you know he won’t betray us?”

As they were talking, Dilraj interrupted. “So where is he located?” Chloe was startled by his voice, as she wasn’t expecting him to speak. But after she got over the scare, both Chloe was confused as to what Dilraj was asking about.

“The assassin who took chieftain Nacnud’s life. Tell me where he is.”

Chloe looked to Da-Wei hoping he knew who Dilraj was referring to. Da-Wei told Chloe he would explain everything another time as Dilraj awaited his answer.

“Listen Dilraj, I know you are seeking retribution against Laghima but I’m afraid your motive will lead you down a dark path.”

“You don’t know where he is, do you?” Da-Wei hesitated, confirming Dilraj’s suspicions. “Hmph, to think I trusted you to guide me. I don’t know what the chieftain saw in you.”

After Dilraj uttered those words, Chloe came crashing in with her fist ready to fight. “Hey you take back what you said! No one gets to insult my friend except me!”

Upon hearing Chloe's response, Dilraj turned his attention to her. “I can’t tell if you are high on courage or just low on brains.”

“Hey what are you saying!”

Dilraj told Chloe to pay attention to her surroundings. She looked around the boat and all she could see was nothing but the ocean. If they were to fight right now, it wouldn’t even be close. Dilraj had access to unlimited resources to bend while Chloe had next to nothing.

However, Chloe was never one to back down and she wasn't going to start now. She stood her ground, stubborn as ever, taunting Dilraj to make the first move. With his patience low, Dilraj was prepared to use the ocean around him to deal with Chloe but something happened that put a halt to their brawl.

“Isabelle! You are awake!” Da-Wei shouted so both Chloe and Dilraj could hear.

She was slow to reply as she was still waking up from her slumber. “Of course I’m awake. How could anyone sleep through all the ruckus you are all causing.”

When she fully opened her eyes, she saw Chloe completely cured of the poison. Immediately she gave her a big hug.

“You are healed!” Isabelle said enthusiastically.

“Of course! No measly poison can keep me down forever!” Chloe boasted.

Isabelle then turned her attention to Dilraj. “That means you must have healed her. Thank you Dilraj.” Suddenly, Chloe’s jaw dropped from absolute shock.

“Wait what? Hold on there! You are telling me this guy is the one who cured me?”

Isabelle nodded in response to Chloe’s question. Dilraj, not wanting to feel embarrassed, looked away from everyone. And Chloe was now feeling extremely awkward after being so rude to Dilraj this whole time.

“So what’s the plan now?” Isabelle asked.

Da-Wei decided to speak up. “Actually, we aren’t entirely sure. We need a safe place to rest and figure out our next move.”

“No worries, I know a place. Dilraj, take us towards the fire nation!”

None of them knew where Isabelle was planning to take them, but with the confidence she exuded, they allowed her to take the lead. Dilraj adjusted the sails of the boat and they were on their journey towards the fire nation.

While the four benders were sailing towards the fire nation, much had happened throughout the world. With the death of Chieftain Nacnud and the disappearance of Dilraj, the people of the Northern Water Tribe were in desperate need of leadership. Seeing their leader impaled with a sword that had an air nomad symbol on it fed their hatred towards the air benders.

General Gursehaj took advantage of this opportunity and sent messages to the water tribes, the fire nation, and the Earth Kingdom about the traitorous deeds of the air nomads. The fire nation, earth kingdom, and the water tribes could no longer wait idly and risk losing another important leader. They took matters into their own hands and launched several attacks against the air temples scattered throughout the world.

War was waged against the air benders and many were forced to leave the air temples. Some were able to escape but many were wounded, and some met their demise. The remaining air benders that got away had nowhere to go. No nation, kingdom, or tribe would accept them after the rumors of their terrible crimes.

In the air nomad’s darkness moment, there was only one person who was willing to give them shelter, Laghima. He gave them food, water, and protection from the rest of the world that rejected them. And in return, all Laghima asked for was their loyalty.

So the air nomads that were saved by Laghima devoted their lives to his cause. They trained under his tutelage to become an army of assassins to fight back the injustice thrown against them. Many became highly skilled and adept, allowing them to fight back and claim the lives of the leaders from the fire nation, earth kingdom and water tribe.

The world had been thrown into utter chaos as war had become the way of life. The conflict would continue with no end in sight. The world desperately needed the avatar or something to restore their hope.
