Avatar: Two Brothers
Chapter 31
Sacrifice
Gurshaan and Arsh reacted by attempting to strike Laghima but Sonoor dove from the air and pinned down the two earth benders. Seeing the other earth benders in trouble, Chloe aimed her first attack at Sonoor but was struck from behind as Ruvnia sucker punched her.
As for the water benders, they were completely caught off guard by Laghima’s army of air benders and were all taken out in an instant. Isabelle and Dilraj attempted to help but all the air benders surrounded and pointed their katanas towards them. Laghmia and his forces had complete control of the situation.
“How disappointing. I thought for a moment you would do what is right and finish that pathetic earth bender general.” Laghima directed his comment to Da-Wei.
“That is not the way. Air benders can prosper with others without causing them harm!”
“You are a fool just like my brother. And for that, you will pay with your life.”
Laghima was about to finish Da-Wei, who had used up nearly all his energy. As Chloe saw what was happening, she struggled to break free from Ruvnia’s grip but her squirming only forced Ruvnia to tighten her grip. Chloe could only watch as Laghima was about to land the final strike on her childhood friend.
At that moment, Dilraj had a sudden burst of energy. He took out a mass of air benders around him and went straight for Laghima. “You! You are the one who killed Chieftain Nacnud! You will pay for what you did!”
Driven by rage, he came within striking distance of Laghima. However, Laghima was not in the slightest bit worried. He knew exactly where to strike to finish off the reckless water bender. “No Dilraj, dont!” Da-Wei warned him.
Thankfully, before Laghima could unleash his lethal strike, Ruvnia intercepted Dilraj and slammed him to the ground. “How dare you attempt to lay your filthy hands on Master Laghmia!” She yelled. She then struck Dilraj with a right punch that sent Dilraj flying against the wall of the battleship.
Dilraj attempted to get up but the pain of the broken ribs was overwhelming. Standing over him was Ruvnia who had her claws out ready to make him pay for attacking her master. As she slashed her claws at the defenseless waterbender, someone jumped in to save his life. The new chieftain of the Northern Water Tribe, Varmevek.
Ruvnia dropped the chieftain’s body and kicked him aside. Dilraj ran towards his old friend shouting, “Varm!” Dilraj reached for his friend, who was in critical condition. He tried to use his water bending to stop the bleeding but it was not enough.
“It's ok Dilraj, save your energy, you are going to need it against them.”
“No! This wasn’t supposed to happen! It should be me who should have become chieftain, not you. If I didn’t run away, this wouldn’t have happened.”
“Ha, it's funny. When I first found out you left the Northern Water Tribe, I was filled with anger thinking you had betrayed us. I thought you were running away from your responsibility. So I was given the mantle of Chieftain and my first task was to bring you back and have you punished. However after seeing you again today, I can see why Cheiftain Nacnud selected you to lead our people.”
He began coughing profusely and he knew his time was nearing its end. Dilraj tried one last time to tell his friend to hold on but he continued, “Please, guide our people back to the right path and don’t let Chieftain Nacnud’s sacrifice be in vain. Moments later, Varmevek stopped moving and his breathing stopped.
As Dilraj moaned for his friend, Ruvnia was about to continue her rampage. She was determined to finish off Dilraj this time, no more interruptions. She pulled her claws back, preparing another lethal strike but before she could attack, a loud roar sounded throughout the entire ship. Everyone turned their focus to the sky where everyone saw a sky bison diving down towards the ship.
The sky bison landed on the ship between Dilraj and Ruvnia, forcing the lady to back off. Rice, who was on the sky bison’s back, threw smoke pellets at the airbenders that were surrounding Isabelle. Isabelle immediately held her breath as the pellets activated, causing a smoke screen that affected the air bender’s senses. In their confusion, Isabelle took out all of Laghima’s warriors in the smoke, before going for Sonoor.
Sonoor saw Isabelle jumping towards her and immediately dodged the attack. It was enough to throw her balance off and allow Chloe to break free from her clutches. Now, she had two benders staring her down.
Laghima saw everything that was going on and decided that he could use Da-Wei as his hostage but interfering with his plan was Ruthar jumping in and creating separation between them with his air blast. Laghima was annoyed with the events that had taken place. His warriors had been taken out, Ruvnia was now facing off against Dilraj, Rice and Mikalya, while Sonoor had her hands full with Chloe and Isabelle.
Sensing victory would come at too high a cost, Laghima used his air bending to create a wind storm forcing his enemies to hold on or risk being blown away. This allowed Sonoor, Ruvnia and him to escape. Before leaving, Laghima had some parting words. “You win this round Ruthar, but you are too late to stop the revolution that is about to happen.”
Ruthar had nothing to say but Da-Wei jumped in, “We will stop you!” Laghima replied with a laugh, “Ha, then come fight us at our fortress. You are welcome anytime, if you can find it.” With that, he and his two loyal followers disappeared.
