Chapter 38

Momentary Peace

The three benders, Ruthar, Chloe, and Da-Wei all collapsed on the ground after a hard fought battle. They could breathe a bit easier or so they thought.

Moments after they were about to celebrate, Laghima lifted his head to face them. Chloe and Da-Wei couldn’t believe it. They were completely out of stamina but Ruthar calmed them down as he moved closer to listen to his brother.

“It seems like you bested me again brother.”

“Will you actually stay down this time?”

“Ha, I can’t promise that. Where would the fun in that be?”

Ruthar was too exhausted and didn’t really have much of a response.

“You better get a lot of rest. You and the younglings will have a lot to clean up after all the chaos I created.” Laghima said.

“Tch, I’ve been cleaning up your mess since we were kids. This will be no different. Now would you do me a huge favour and go to sleep? It's past your bedtime.” Ruthar replied.

They both exchanged one last verbal shot at each other before Laghima's head slowly fell back and his eyes closed. Both Chloe and Da-Wei were still on their guard wondering if Laghima was finished for good this time. It took a moment but Ruthar assured them that his brother would no longer cause them any more problems.

Finally, Da-Wei was able to let out a huge sigh of relief. “Well that was close, but we all made it through in the end, right Chloe?” As she stood right in front of him, she threw an uppercut suddenly right at his face.

“Hey! What in the world was that for?” Da-Wei shouted while holding his face that was throbbing in pain.

“That was for faking your death. How inconsiderate of you to pull a stunt like that.” Chloe sounded unimpressed.

Da-Wei tried to explain that it was the only way they could get the upper hand on Laghima. But again Chloe replied to Da-Wei with another punch to the face.

“And that is for making excuses.” Chloe added.

As Da-Wei turned to Ruthar in hopes he would help plead his case to Chloe. However, Ruthar just looked at him and shrugged his shoulders. Da-Wei couldn’t believe it, even his master wouldn’t help him out. He was about to lose hope until he saw people approaching from a distance. They were Isabelle, Dilraj, Risensa, and Rice.

When they arrived, they noticed that Laghima had been defeated but they were curious as to why Da-Wei was beaten up so badly. Chloe and Ruthar explained to everyone what had happened and how Da-Wei faked his death, causing emotional turmoil for the both of them.

“Oh, that's a terrible thing to do. How heartless of you.” Isabelle responded.

Da-Wei turned to Dilraj hoping he would understand. “Sorry man, faking your death is not a custom in my tribe.”

“Yeah you really shouldn’t have done that. Oh well, you live and you learn.” After Rice spoke up, Da-Wei jumped up in rage. “Hey! You are the one who told me about that move!”

Immediately, Rice looked at everyone, “I have no idea what he is talking about.”

After Rice denied having any knowledge of the event, Da-Wei chased after Rice. Chloe, who was still angry at Da-Wei, then chased after him. And upon seeing what was happening, Dilraj and Isabelle thought they should follow them to make sure no one gets hurt.

Ruthar looked at the silliness that was happening. It brought a smile to his face as it had been awhile since he had seen this beautiful sight. He knew that he could only experience this momentary peace briefly but he savoured every second of it.
