Avatar: Two Brothers
Chapter 4
The Message
During the evening, within the fire nation temple was the Avatar lying in bed rest. He was kept company by the fire sages who would tend to his needs. However, it was clear his time was nearly up, he had lost almost all his muscles, his mental health was declining and he was barely able to speak.
He reached out his hand to call one of the sages to his side. The fire sage made his way to the avatar. The avatar attempted to say his final words but his hand suddenly dropped and his body was now lifeless.
All the fire sages in the room bowed their heads and mourned for the Avatar that had kept the peace of the entire world. After their moment of silence, they stood up and began to cover the body. They were making preparations to have a funeral the following day.
The majority of the sages stayed in the temple to help prepare but one of them was asked by the head fire sage to send a message. The people of the world needed to know that the Avatar from the fire nation was no more but they should fear not as the new Avatar would be reborn as an Air Nomad. The fire mage took the letter and made his way to the mailing post.
When the fire sage arrived at the post, he saw the area was filled with bird cages and documents to be delivered. He was not impressed by the organization of the place as well as the teenager sleeping and snoring at the front desk.
Unamused, the sage lit a small fire beneath his bottom. Slowly, smoke arose from the chair and suddenly the boy jumped out of his seat. “HOT HOT!” He screamed for a moment before standing up and responding to the customer in front of him.
“My apologies sir! My name is Jovan! How may I be of service?” The fire sage had no interest in pleasantries. He wanted to know where he could find the owner of the place. “NO, please don’t tell my master that I slept on the job again! He will kick me out! Please!”
The fire sage was annoyed but he saw an opportunity to use this as his advantage. “Very well, I have a special task for you. Complete it and I will not report this to your master.” The messenger boy cried tears of joy as he thanked the fire sage.
The sage then slides an envelope with a special seal on it. It was the seal of the Fire Nation to signal the utmost importance of the letter. “I will make sure this gets delivered in no time!” Jovan quickly grabs the letter and places it in the correct spot to be sent out by the messenger hawk tomorrow. “All done! I have accomplished the mission!”
“You aren’t done just yet.” The sage interrupted. He then slipped on the desk one more sealed envelope. Jovan picked it up and saw a symbol on the seal that he did not recognize. It seemed very similar to the air nomad symbol but the lines were extremely jagged.
“I don’t recognize this symbol? Who is this going to?” Asked the curious teenager. “Let’s just keep that a secret between the two of us. After all, you don’t want me telling your master that you fell asleep right?” Jovan immediately accepted the letter and didn’t ask further questions.
“I will have it sent out first thing in the morning!” He was ready to turn around and have it prepared but the sage cleared his throat. “Ahem, send it now. It's quite urgent.” Sensing how serious the sage was, he got one of the messenger hawks, attached the message to its talon and released it.
Still worried that there was more to do Jovan asked nervously, “Is that everything?”
The fire sage turns around and begins walking away with a malicious grin on his face. “That is all, thank you for your assistance.”
