Avatar: Bounties
Chapter 2
The Diamond Rough
In a village known as ‘the diamond rough,’ is where our story begins. Duncan and Da-Yong are the age of 14 and they have been living in the village together all their lives. They were very close friends because they were both known to cause shenanigans wherever they go. Duncan was the calm, cool and collected water bender but don’t let that fool you, he is quite the fighter and the strategist between the two. On the other hand, Da-Yong was the easy to anger fire bender known for his unpredictable fighting style. They had been training in the Relevant Academy under Master Ruthar, a master fire bender, since they were young and had become very skilled fighters. However, there comes a time when even a master can only teach them so much. When Da-Yong and Duncan turned 14 and heard about multitudes of benders partaking in bounties and riches, Master Ruthar knew it was time to set his pupils free.
Of course, their parents were worried sick about them when they heard about their decisions to start on their adventure. However, Da-Yong and Duncan had a dream to go out on an adventure and test their skills to see what they were really made out of. And so they got themselves ready and headed towards town hall where the Board of Bounties was located to see what mission they could take first.
On the Board of Bounties there were countless lists of wild animals, pirates, bandits, and hunters up for the taking. Some rewards were for bringing the animals alive, and some did not matter. The listings were colour coded symbolizing how difficult each bounty was. Yellow listings were for beginners where the rewards were small and the danger was minimal. From there the colours went in this order: orange, green, purple, blue, brown, red, and finally the dread black listings. As tempting as it was for our heroes to snatch a black listing, they knew it would be suicide to do so. In fact some of the bounties in the black listing weren’t even for dangerous animals but for ruthless hunters who were a danger to the wild animals and other participants. Some of the names on the list were: Nase, Sitkar, and Tsuejin. However, the number one bounty worth one trillion gold pieces (not copper) was a hunter named ‘Rice the Rampage’ whose strength was legendary and left a trail of destruction wherever he went.
Duncan quickly swipes a yellow listing so that they could begin their journey. As they were walking and about to leave the village, Da-Yong inquired, “So what dangers awake our first mission?!” Little did Da-Yong know, Duncan had randomly selected a listing without reading the full details and so when he took a look for the first time the bounty read: bring back live chameleon skunk worth 50 copper pieces. Da-Yong was unamused and burst out, “A CHAMELEON SKUNK?! OF ALL THINGS WHY THAT?!” Realizing his blunder Duncan quickly assured Da-Yong that all was well and they just needed to go back to the Board of Bounties to get another one.
As they turned to face toward their destination, they were met with a bump in the road. Two children ran full speed towards them to grab their attention, one boy and one girl. Their names were Chloe, younger sister to Duncan, and Da-Wei younger brother to Da-Yong. When they all met up Duncan could already sense that Chloe was not in a great mood. He asked her to see what was wrong and she replied, “You aren’t going to actually kill the animals are you?” Duncan hesitated, “Well, you see it’s a bit complicated, I mean I’ll try not to…” and immediately Da-Yong interrupts “I will punch every animal that gets in our way!” Chloe reacts by kicking and throwing a fury of punches at Da-Yong and Da-Wei had to intervene and attempt to hold Chloe back.
After everyone got untangled and they all settled down, Chloe realized that Da-Yong might have been joking. Chloe and Da-Wei were mainly there to see their older brothers off on their journey and to pass their parents' regards to them. After exchanging hugs, the older brothers began their journey as the two younger siblings could only watch and hope that one day, that they could join their brothers on an adventure as well.
