Invitation

They both went back into Ruthar’s quarters to tidy up the mess that was created by the intruder. While they were working together, Ruthar began to share what he had been hiding from Da-Wei.

“Da-Wei, I’m not sure if you have been informed about this but the Western Air Temple was attacked about a week ago.”

He remembered hearing the other students talking about it when he arrived at the temple late that day.

“I don’t know the exact details of what happened but I suspect many of the air nomads there are no longer around.”

“What?!” Da-Wei was in shock, “But how do you know that?”

Ruthar pointed towards his bed where there was the baby lying down, wrapped in a blanket.

“The baby? What does that have to do with anything?”

“That baby is the avatar.”

Again Da-Wei was baffled. He couldn’t picture the most powerful human to be in such a defenseless state.

Ruthar continued, “For the monks at the Western Air Temple to send the avatar over here in such desperation, means the foe they faced was too much for them to handle.”

“So what are we going to do now Master Ruthar?”

“We are going to Ba Sing Se located in the Earth Kingdom.”

“Ba Sing Se? Why there?”

Ruthar pulled out the message he received from the messenger hawk that day and revealed the contents to Da-Wei. The message was from the Earth King and he was issuing an emergency meeting to the leaders of the Fire Nation, Water Tribe, Air Nomads, and Earth Kingdom. They are all to meet at Ba Sing Se in two weeks time.

As Da-Wei finished reading the message, Ruthar told him to head home and get ready. Da-Wei was caught by surprise but Ruthar repeated himself sternly, “We leave first thing in the morning tomorrow, so go home and have everything ready. Meet me by the temple fields at sun-rise, if you are late I will leave without you.”

Everything was happening so quickly for Da-Wei to process. “Master Ruthar, could we have another day before we leave, I have to…” Not allowing him to finish, Ruthar went into a burst of rage, “Da-Wei! There is no time for your indecisiveness!”

He kicks him out of his quarters and Da-Wei lands on his bottom. “Now go home and get some rest. Good night!” and the door slams shut.

It was extremely late, so Da-Wei began making his way back from the temple to his house. As he was walking, he passed by the lake where he was earlier in the day. It reminded him of his friend Chloe, who he wanted to say goodbye to before leaving for the Earth Kingdom.

Unfortunately, it was late into the night without any light in any of the houses. Da-Wei could only hope that his trip to Ba Sing Se would not be a long one. He eventually made it back into his house, where he spent the remaining hours of the day, preparing for his new mission.
