Chapter 10
Ship Storm
As Jiyah popped out onto the deck, another massive downpour of rain was occurring. However this time, it was followed by violent winds and a thunderstorm. Maggie was doing everything she could to keep the ship afloat while Riya was pointing and signaling to help navigate her. As Jiyah saw all this occurring, she shouted to Nadya to keep Reina safe.
After informing her teammates, Jiyah ran towards Maggie asking her if there was anything she could do to help. Being super occupied, Maggie was very short tempered, “I don’t mean to be rude but we are in the middle of a storm and one of the sails is torn. So unless you know how to steer this ship, you are in the way!” The words were a bit harsh but Jiyah knew that Maggie had much to deal with at the moment. She had never driven a ship in her life so she was no help there.
Jiyah was about to walk back to the lower deck but before she entered down the hatch, she looked up towards the sail that was broken. She immediately turned back to Maggie which was not well received. “Why are you back here? I told you unless you know how to drive…” Before Maggie could finish, Jiyah interrupted. “How do I fix the sails?”
Maggie was speechless, she didn’t expect Jiyah to volunteer to help her fix the ship. “What are you, crazy? You are going to get struck by lightning if you climb up there!” She exclaimed. Jiyah didn’t say a word, she stood standing with eyes of convictions which was enough to sway Maggie’s mind. “Oh for the love of, why did I have to end up with this group of nut cases? Take Riya with you, she will point out what you have to do. So Riya left her navigation duties and ran ahead to guide Jiyah to the sails.
The first task was to make sure the right knots on the deck were properly secured. Riya pointed to which ones needed to be tightening and Jiyah completed the task. She then had to climb up the wooden pole in order to reach the sails and strengthen them by tying the ropes on them. It was going to be a dangerous task as falling from that height would not be ideal. Riya grabbed a bundle of loose rope for Jiyah so she could have a safety line in case she fell.
Jiyah tied the rope around her waist and then around the post. Riya then came back to drop off a couple of boots with spikes on the bottom along with a couple of arrows that would allow her to scale up the pole. Jiyah put on boots, grabbed the arrows and began to ascend towards the top.
Once she got up to the platform on the top, she took off the rope in order to maneuver and tie the sail down tight. The rain was still falling but Jiyah was too focused on the repairs to notice. After she tied the last knot, Riya the monkey gave a thumbs up to signal that Jiyah had successfully repaired the sails. She was about to begin her descend but a massive gust of wind blew her off balance causing her to fall off the platform.
Jiyah tried to grab on to something as she fell but there was nothing. She was falling fast and she headed for the torrential ocean. Lucky for Jiyah, before she fell past the upper deck, some reached out their hand to grab her arm before she could fall any further. The person who grabbed her arm was Nadya.
“What are you doing out here? Aren’t you supposed to be watching Reina?” Jiyah said in surprise. “She ain’t going anywhere. Plus I couldn’t just let you have all the fun out here.” Nadya struggled to get those words out while holding Jiyah’s arm. Because of all the rain, their grip was beginning to slip and it looked as if Jiyah would fall into the ocean.
Riya rushed to Maggie and frantically began to point in Nadya’s direction. Maggie could see the predicament that they were in. She quickly spun the steering wheel around causing the ship to swing around quickly. The momentum of the ship turning, threw Nadya and Jiyah back onto the ship as they fell on their backs.
The two were slow to get up and as they got to their feet, Maggie shouted to them, “Hang on tight, we ain’t out of the storm yet!” Jiyah and Nadya grabbed on to whatever they could find as Maggie navigated them through the storm. The last thing Jiyah and Nadya remember was seeing a giant wave rising and crashing down on the ship. They managed to stay aboard the ship but they fell unconscious and had no recollection of the events after.
The Doctor
When Jiyah and Nadya woke up, they had been tucked into separate beds on the lower deck of the ship. Maggie brought them down here while they fell unconscious from the storm. That was when they both had the sudden realization, was the storm over and was Reina safe? They rushed out of bed and saw that Reina was still resting in the same spot. Their next stop was back to the upper deck. As they opened the hatch up, they saw the bright sunny sky and the ship had docked.
“Finally woke up from your slumber sleepy heads?” Maggie asked them sarcastically. Jiyah and Nadya were not sure how to reply. On one hand they didn’t care much for her attitude but at the same time, she did navigate them safely through the rough waters and take care of them while they were unconscious. They swallowed their pride and thanked the pirate for her ‘kindness.’
“Alright, that is enough, I can only take so much kindness for one day. You have all arrived at the Northern Highlands, just as your rogue friend paid me for. Now you both better hurry and get her to a doctor. The poison could have only gotten worse.” After hearing her words, Jiyah and Nadya quickly ran to grab Reina and lead her out onto land.
Nadya was carrying Reina on her back while Jiyah ran ahead into the village to see if she could find a doctor. The village was very small, not even a population of fifty people perhaps. Jiyah was knocking on every door she could find, yelling for help but no one would answer. After the tenth house that Jiyah knocked on, Nadya could feel Reina’s condition getting worse. Jiyah punched the next door she saw in anger, “Please someone, anyone! Our friend is very sick, she needs help!” But once again no one came to the door.
They had their heads down as if they had been defeated. As Jiyah had her hands over her face, a little animal ran up and stood at her feet. It was a cute little puppy looking curiously at Jiyah. It was a miniature Schnauzer Bichon Shih Tzu mix. The adorable looking puppy brought a smile to both Jiyah and Nadya for the moment. As they were about to ask the little critter if it had an owner, someone from the distance began calling out to it.
“Oh Timbit! There you are!” The owner of the dog called out to it. She walked up to Jiyah and Nadya and apologized if her puppy had caused them any trouble. They were both happy to see the puppy and asked the kind lady what her name was. The lady introduced herself as Sediya, a veterinarian who was still in her early teenage years.
Nadya began asking Sediya where all the people in the village were. She told them with a heavy heart that people were hiding in their homes. In the past couple of years, there was a giant living near the village that was angrily attacking the people of the village. Because of that, everyone has been too scared to go out or open doors to any strangers.
After hearing their story, Jiyah realized that Reina’s condition was worsening. She asked Sediya where they could find a doctor in the village. Sediya regrettably informs them that the doctor of the village refused to see anyone at this time. Reina's body temperature was getting extremely high and she was beginning to sweat. Time was of the essence and they desperately needed to find a doctor.
All of a sudden, Nadya had a realization, “Wait a minute, you are a doctor! You can help our friend!” she directed at Sediya. The comment caught Sediya off guard, “What? I can’t do that. I’m a doctor for pets like Timbit over here! I’ve never had a human patient before!” Jiyah and Nadya both began pleading for Sediya’s help. “Please, you are the only one who can help our friend.” Jiyah begged. Filled with uncertainty, Sediya looked at Timbit giving her happy cute looking face. Sediya took that as assurance from her puppy and agreed to help.
Sediya guided them to her house where Nadya dropped Reina off on a bed. Nadya and Jiyah were then asked to leave the room so Sediya could focus on treating Reina. Both the girls complied and stepped out of the room awaiting for the results.
A couple hours had passed but Sediya was still operating in the room. Nadya and Jiyah hadn’t left the room they were waiting in the entire time. They also didn’t have much to say as they were just hoping the operation would be a success. They continued to alternate between sitting down with their hands over their face and pacing around the room.
Finally, after an additional hour or so, Sediya came out of the room taking off her mask and catching her breath. Nadya rushed up to Sediya while Jiyah hung back to hear the results. “Well I don’t have the antidote to cure your friend from the poison.” Nadya and Jiyah let out a gasp. “So I did the next best thing I could and your friend will be okay!” she said happily. The news brought joy to both the girls. Nadya rushed into the room to see how Reina was doing. She was lying in bed still weak and recovering from the poison but she was definitely on the road to recovery.
“So if you couldn’t find the antidote, what did you do exactly?” Jiyah asked her with curiosity. “Well, it wasn’t pleasant, but the best method I knew was to expel as much of the toxin in her body as possible.” Sediya informed her. “So you mean there could still be some poison remaining in her body.” Sediya nodded, “The rest depends on how tough your friend is.” Jiyah looked towards Nadya and Reina as Nadya was catching her up on all the events that happened.
“Reina will survive, she is one of the toughest people I know.” she said proudly. Sediya was glad to hear those words coming from Jiyah. She then left the area to allow the three to catch up and rest up for their long journey ahead.
