Chapter 12
The Lady and the Mangolor
They crossed the field and came across a house that was in the shape of a mango. Jiyah thought that it was an extremely weird choice for a house but on the bright side, it was very distinguishable. As they got closer towards the mango house, there was a lady near the entrance of the home. Recognizing who it was, Reina dashed ahead of Jiyah and Nadya and gave the lady a giant hug.
Once Jiyah and Nayda had caught up to them at the entrance, Reina began to introduce her friend. “Nadya, Jiyah, this is Lady Amisha! She is the person who has told me about the wonder beyonds the Kingdom of the West and about the wizard who lives in the Northern Highlands!” she said with enthusiasm. Nadya began to kneel on one leg, “It is an honor to finally meet you, your grace.” Jiyah, who was still standing, received an elbow from Nadya, signaling her to kneel as well. Holding her right ribs, she reluctantly paid her respect to Amisha.
Amisha immediately told them both to stand up and explain why they were kneeling to her. Nadya explained that she was the princess and it was a well known custom to show respect to a noble. “Oh that’s very kind but I’m not the princ...” Amisha was interrupted before she could finish her sentence.
They heard footsteps coming from inside the mango house. “Hey Amisha I hear a lot of voices outside, is Jasmine back for more mangos again?” The door opened and a boy in his mid-teens wearing glasses appeared. Amisha introduced him to everyone as Jawad, the mango wizard.
He was extremely friendly and allowed everyone into his home. He gave them a tour around his small but very interesting house. His house was filled with many interesting devices such as mangos of all sizes and colours, cubes with many different colour combinations, and a collection of flying contraptions. Jawad would go into excruciating detail about each object leaving no room for any of them to ask questions.
Jawad would have gone on all day but Jiyah noticed a painting on the wall with three young wizards on it. As Jiyah, Reina, and Nadya stared at the painting, they were curious about the painting and began to ask about the picture.
“Oh those are the three wizard apprentices who studied at the wizard academy. And I am the greatest student, the MANGOLOR!” he bragged. For some reason Jiyah didn’t believe what he said. Jawad was about to defend himself, but he could sense an ominous presence outside of the house. He told everyone to stay in the house while he went out to investigate.
As the mango wizard stepped out of his home, Reina, Jiyah, Nadya and Amisha began to peak through the window to see what was going on. Outside of the house with Jawad was the fire mage Cole accompanied by an army of dread knights.
Cole: Jawad, my old friend! Long time no see!
Jawad: Hi Cole, what brings you and your welcoming party out here? I’m guessing you weren’t planning on just stopping by.
Cole: Perceptive as always! Well you see, I heard rumors that you might have knowledge about a missing rogue.
Jawad: I do not know where she is.
Cole: Perhaps there might be someone inside your house who might know?
Jawad: Sorry Cole, only guests are allowed inside.
Cole: Oh come on Jawad, we are practically best buds!
Jawad: We were, but times have changed.
Cole: Listen, I tried to be nice. Just turn over whoever is in your house. I don’t want to fight you. Please Jawad.
Jawad stood his ground leaving Cole no choice but to engage in battle. Cole’s hand began to light up with fire and he began blasting fireballs towards Jawad. Without flinching, Jawad created some motions with his arms and casted a spell on the fireballs, turning them into harmless mangos.
With his range attack thwarted, Cole began closing the gap by trying to connect with a fire punch but Jawad was quite agile and managed to evade all the attacks. Jawad then jumped back to separate himself from Cole and then he raised both his arms up into the air. He was channeling his magic for one big attack, his signature move, the mango bomb!
The attack created a big explosion on the battlefield and covered it with a barrier of smoke. Amisha, Jiyah, Nadya, and Reina were still watching intently to see the aftermath of the attack. “Well he might have some really silly powers but this mango wizard is quite strong.” Jiyah admitted. “Jawad is strong, but unfortunately it might not be enough.” Amisha said with worry in her voice. The three weren’t sure what Amisha meant, so they continued to watch on.
The smoke finally cleared, Cole took some damage from Jawad’s attack but he managed to avoid taking a fatal hit. Jawad on the other hand had used quite a bit of energy and was hoping that attack would have assured him victory. Cole begins walking up to Jawad again, “Please Jawad, just turn the rogue over. I know you have her in your home.” Jawad stood his ground and refused to give in. Cole looked down in disappointment. Both his fists began to burn red hot and he was ready to strike but he was interrupted by another mage who appeared in the middle of their fight.
Jiyah, Nadya, and Reina had never seen this mage before but they felt they had a bad feeling about him. Seeing the events that had transpired, Reina left the window and ran towards the door. Amisha tried to stop her but Reina was too quick. Jiyah and Nadya were about to join Reina but Amisha held them back in order to tell them something important.
The new mage was the same age as Cole and Jawad but had an ominous presence about him. He launched a blast of ice from his hand and froze Jawad’s lower body to the ground. Jawad was in pain and unable to move. The ice mage walked up to him and demanded Jawad to tell him what he wanted to know.
Despite being in pain Jawad spoke, “Hey Kabir, long time no see. Is this how you greet an old friend after all this time?” The ice mage was not amused, he intensified his magic and the ice was beginning to travel up Jawad’s upper torso. Cole tried to tell his comrade to stop but was ignored.
As the ice crawled up to Jawad’s neck, Reina appeared in front of the three mages. “Stop! I am the one you want, let him go and I will come without any resistance.” She spoke to the ice mage. “You must be the elusive rogue that has evaded my forces for so long. Very well, surrender yourself and I will leave this pitiful wizard alone.” He said in a low toned voice. Reina was slowly walking towards the two mages but Amisha interrupted them, “Wait. She’s not the one you want, I am. Take me and let them go.”
The ice mage was not happy and had no time for games. “We are looking for the rogue so you can’t fool us with your trickery.” Cole said. “I am the person you are looking for. I’m the princess of the west.” Her words caught the attention of ice and fire mage. “Prove it!” demanded the ice mage. Amisha walked over to Jawad and held her hand out near Jawad. A radiant glow appeared from her hand and light began to transfer from her hand into Jawad’s wound, sealing up the fatal wounds.
After witnessing what Amisha had done, the ice mage affirmed, “Only those who are nobles could cast healing spells.” With her identity confirmed, the ice mage immediately created an ice prison around Amisha. He then pulled the ice cage towards him, claiming his new prisoner. Reina tried to run towards them but Nadya and Jiyah held her back. “What are you both doing? We have to help her!” But they wouldn’t let go.
Before leaving, the ice mage began to channel a great force of magic toward his right hand. He then unleashed it against his targets: Nadya, Jiyah, Reina, and Jawad. His attack had just barely missed them but it created a field of ice around them. “What are you doing, I thought we had a deal!” Amisha shouted in panic. The ice mage looked away from her, pretending he never made such a claim. As he raised his hand again to unleash another blast of ice, Cole grabbed his hand. “That’s enough, they're not worth your time.” the fire mage interrupted.
The ice mage looked angrily at his comrade, “You do not tell me what to do!” His reaction to his own teammate surprised the girls. The ice mage stopped his assault and began to turn around with his prisoner while Cole slowly followed behind. Reina attempted to get back up to chase them but her body suddenly began to feel a radiating pain. Some of the remaining poison was causing her some discomfort.
Nadya went to Reina to see if she was okay, while Jiyah checked on Jawad. Reina still had the strength to walk on her own but Jawad was still recovering from the freezing attacks from the ice mage. Jiyah had to help Jawad back up but as she was doing so, an army of dread knights appeared before them.
Nadya and Jiyah drew their weapons, standing ready to defend Reina and Jawad. The dread knights charged in mindlessly with a weapon in their hands. Nadya was able to take down a couple of the dread knights with the swing of both her swords. On the other hand, Jiyah easily disarmed a dread knight before tossing it against another.
“Haha, that’s four that I took out! What is your count at? Jiyah asked. “Ten.” Nayda replied calmly as she continued fighting. “What?! How? Count again!” Jiyah barked in disbelief. As she was looking at Nadya, she didn’t notice a dread knight behind her. Nadya quickly ran up to her and swung both her swords at the gruesome creature. “Eleven” she declared with a smile. Jiyah gave a disgruntled look and continued fighting on.
The knights weren’t very strategic compared to other opponents they had fought but they were endless. Everytime Nadya and Jiayh took one out, it seemed like two more would take its place. They were beginning to feel worn out against the countless numbers. The dread knights kept pushing them back until they had nowhere to go. Jiyah and Nadya were still standing infront of Reina and Jawad but for how much longer?
As the dread knights were about to make another charge, a giant boulder came flying in and crushed a few of them. The one who threw the rock was Jasmine the giant, who had come to their rescue. She jumped into the air and slammed the ground with her fist causing a huge shockwave, knocking down a majority of the dark army.
Jiyah and Nadya were about to thank Jasmine but she quickly lowered her hand to them. “Quickly get on, I will get you to safety!” She spoke frantically. Once, Reina and Jawad were in Jasmine’s hands, Jiyah and Nadya hopped on Jasmine’s shoulders. “Hang on tight, it's going to be a bumpy ride!” And she fled from dread knights and back towards the village.
