Chapter 13
The Dragon’s Host
Jasmine brought everyone back to the village where it was safe for the time being. She knelt down to allow everyone to hop off her hand and shoulder. Reina was feeling much better and was able to walk again. Unfortunately, Jawad was still in excruciating pain and unable to move on his own. Nadya and Jiyah both grabbed one of his arms so they could carry him towards Sediya’s home.
Once they arrived at Sediya’s home, they knocked on her door and were greeted once again by Timbit, her puppy. As the door fully opened, Sediya was surprised to see them back so soon. Reina apologized for bothering Sediya again but they had nowhere else to go and needed a place to rest. Sediya happily allowed them entry into her home again.
Nadya and Jiyah placed Jawad on the resting place and after doing so, they collapsed from exhaustion. Sediya came with a tray full of tea to help everyone revitalize their energy.
Sediya: I hope it doesn’t become a daily thing where you keep bringing someone in critical condition to my house.
Reina: We are really sorry. We went through a lot up in the highlands.
Sediya: I can see that. No need to explain.
Jiyah: We barely got out of there alive!
Nadya: That was quite the scare, and that ice mage, just who is he exactly?
Jawad: Kabir.
Reina, Jiyah, Nadya: Jawad! You are okay?!
Jawad: Yes I’m alright, the healing spell casted on me has sped up my recovery but I still have some minor injuries.
Reina: Phew, that’s great to hear!
Jiyah: So this ice mage, his name is Kabir? How do you know him? For that matter how do you know Cole as well?
Nadya: Yes please tell us.
Jawad: That painting you saw back in my home with the three mages, that was the three of us when we were younger. We were all young wizards that trained under the apprentices of the great wizard. Cole was the fire mage, Kabir had the element of ice, and I was blessed with the power of…
Reina: Mangos!
Jiyah: Really? Of all the wizards with different elements we could have on our side we end up with one who has the power to conjure up mangos?!
Nadya: What’s wrong? You are always the one who goes on about wanting more food.
Jawad: Ahem!
Reina, Jiyah, Nadya: Sorry!
Jawad: We were constantly told at the wizard academy to focus on our training because Dragkonis could return one day and finish what he started. Unfortunately, we didn’t think that would happen during our time.
The time came when all the wizards gathered for a grand examination that would test our strength, skill and mind. Completing this examination would earn you respect, honor, and most importantly you would be recognized as a master class magician. I don’t mean to brag or anything but I managed to pass the examination.
Jiyah: Please stop.
Nadya: So what happened to Cole and Kabir?
Jawad: Cole passed the examination as well but Kabir had a bit of complication. In order to be recognized as a master class magician one must have a good heart and no ill-intent of using their magic. Unfortunately, the headmaster wizard felt an aura of malice around Kabir and refused to promote him. Kabir was furious, raging that the headmaster was jealous that one day he would surpass him in power. The situation got very heated with the headmaster standing over Kabir but before the situation could escalate any further, a horde of dread knights invade the wizard academy without any warning.
Cole, Kabir, and I fought off as many of them as we could and we seemed to have them pushed back until a human prince appeared and turned the tide of the battle. It was Prince Yuz Lez but he had a portion of Dragkonis’s essence within him. He was so powerful he wiped out half of the academy in just one spell. He knocked the three of us aside and made his way directly to the headmaster. The headmaster put up a good fight but even he was no match against the possessed prince. As the prince was about to finish our headmaster off, Kabir still had enough energy to jump in between them to halt the prince’s attack. The prince was looking to finish them off in one strike but he halted his attack midway. The prince’s body was weak and Dragkonis needed a new host. It sensed the darkness within Kabir’s heart and offered him power beyond his imagination.
The headmaster implored Kabir to resist and that the dark mage was deceiving him. However, Kabir still remembered how the headmaster treated him moments before during the examination. Kabir held out his hand and openly allowed Dragkonis’s essence to enter within his body. He shouted in pain as the dark spirit left the prince’s body and entered into his. Kabir’s body survived but his soul was lost after that day. Upon acquiring his new power, he immediately put it to the test, his first victim, was our headmaster.
After eliminating the headmaster, he turned towards me and Cole to ask us to join him. I refused to join and he raised his hand, ready to finish me but Cole interfered. Cole said he would agree to follow Kabir as long as he let me live. So Cole left with Kabir, and true to his word, he let me live, but not before destroying the rest of the wizard academy.
Jiyah: Wait so Cole is a good guy now? I’m confused.
Jawad: Both Cole and Kabir are good in nature. Kabir isn’t himself right now, since he is being possessed by Dragkonis. I believe Cole wants to make sure nothing bad happens to Kabir so he is staying close to him.
Nadya: Thanks for sharing your story. But what does Dragkonis want with the princess?
Jawad: I am not completely sure what he needs the princess for. But I know Dragkonis wants to break free of his prison. The princess might somehow play a part in all this.
Nadya: Then we have to save Amisha right away. She risked her life to save us and we have to return the favour.
Reina: Yes! We must save Amisha! So what is our next move?
Jawad: We are going to head to the Barren Wastelands in the South.
Jiyah: Is that where your former wizard friends are going to be?
Jawad: Possibly, but we have more important matters to attend to over there.
Reina: Wait! I thought we were saving Amisha!
Jawad: We will, but there is something we must do at the Barren Wastelands which will aid us in rescuing Amisha.
Jiyah: What makes you so sure that’s Dragkonis won’t just revive himself suddenly now that he has the princess.
Jawad: Oh that’s very simple. He doesn’t have the princess.
Nadya: Wait come again?
Jawad: Amisha isn’t the princess.
Jiyah: Then who is?
Jawad eyes looked passed Jiyah and Nadya onto someone behind them. Jiyah and Nadya followed Jawad’s line of sight, leading to the person whom he identified as the princess. Reina eyes’ met all theirs and she felt nervous letting out a simple, “Hi!”
