Chapter 26
Escape
“We have to get out of here right now!” Jawad urgently yelled. The ground was cracking and debris of rocks were falling upon them. Jiyah and Maggie ran to Reina and Amisha who were both still lying on the ground. Jiyah picked up Reina and Maggie got Amisha. Finally, Jawad got a hold of Kabir and together they all began to make their escape.
Nadya was on her knees near Leyyah who was extremely weak after sustaining severe damage from the dragon’s attack. Nadya wanted to get Leyyah to safety but she held out her hand to decline the offer. Leyyeh knew her injuries were beyond recovery and Nadya’s chances of escaping would be much higher without having to carry her. Nadya refused and as she was about to argue, Leyyeh held out her sheathed sword to Nadya.
Nadya froze as she stared at the majestic sword, being presented to her. “Take it.” Nadya declined but Leyyah pressed on. “This weapon is no use to me anymore. Use it well to protect those you care for.” Nadya slowly reached out her arm and grabbed the sword with her right hand. “I might not be around but as long as you fight with this sword, I will be with you in spirit.” Nadya gave Leyyah a hug, holding back her tears. She thanked Leyyeh for all she had done and once the moment was over, Nadya got up and moved forward to catch up with her team.
Maggie, Jawad, Jiyah, and Nadya were running as fast as they could while taking care of two unconscious people. They eventually arrived back to the area where Ranak, Aaryav, Eshaan and Ishaan were battling against Kabir. They were all conscious but parts of their body was encased with ice preventing them from escaping.
“We have to help them!” Jiyah called out but Jawad rebuffed, “We don’t have enough time!” Jiyah didn’t listen. She let Reina down for a moment and began punching the ice to try and break them free. Seeing her determination, Maggie let Amisha down and pulled out her cutlass to break the ice. They put in as much effort as they could but the ice was tough. Jiyah and Maggie were exhausted and they were out of options.
Suddenly they hear a noise in the distance that sounded like loud footsteps. Someone from afar was running towards them with tremendous speed, it was Birkaran the Ogre. He rushed out of his home once all the earthquakes began and now found himself reunited with his former enemies. He saw that they were in quite the predicament and he told everyone to stand back and for the royal guards and mercenaries to brace themselves.
One by one he freed Aaryav, Ranak, Ishaan, and Eshaan by smashing the ice with his fist. Now that they were free, they were able to get back on their feet and move out with everyone. Birkaran noticed how exhausted Maggie and Jiyah were so he put both Reina and Amisha on his shoulder and began to carry them both. He noticed Jawad was carrying Kabir but didn’t offer to help him.
With everyone accounted for they began making their way back to Maggie’s ship. They had made it back to where they had set up camp for the villagers to rest. Unfortunately, more cracks began to appear on the ground and out of the cracks came dread knights popping out to attack them. Aaryav, Ranak, Ishaan and Eshaan were about to pull out their weapons but Nadya stepped in. “Make sure everyone makes it to the ship safely, these guys are mine.”
While everyone went to help the villagers and the unconscious people get on the ship, Nadya drew out the sword Leyyah had handed to her. As she gripped the sword firmly, she felt imbued with the fighting spirit of Leyyah. She went head on against the army of dread knights all by herself.
She took out many of the minions but they seemed endless. A couple of dread knights began to lunge forward thinking they might have caught her off guard but a fireball came in and disintegrated them. Cole had arrived to aid Nadya in her fight. Together they were able to handle the horde with ease with Nadya taking the frontline and Cole incinerating them from afar.
Once everyone was on the ship and Maggie was at the helm, Eshaan yelled at the top of his lungs to get Nadya and Cole’s attention. Cole casted a fiery laser ray down a straight line to create a clear path for them to run towards the ship. They began to follow the path and any dread knight that was brave enough to stop them was slashed aside by Nadya.
As they were nearing the ship, Maggie started to turn the boat around to gain some momentum. Riya quickly found a rope, tossed one end towards Nadya and gave the other end to Ranak and Aaryav. Nadya caught the rope and gave it a slight tug to let them know to pull her up. Once they felt the signal, Ranak and Aaryav began to pull the rope up with Nadya hanging on.
As the two royal guards continued their efforts, a few dread knights jumped onto the ledge of the ship and began to climb aboard. However, once they made it onto the deck, they were swatted aside by Eshaan and Ishaan, making sure none of them could interfere with the royal guards.
After the Eishaans had dealt with the unwanted guests, Aaryav and Ranak pulled Nadya back onto the ship. Nadya then rushed to the stern of the ship to let Cole know that she was safely aboard. When Cole got the confirmation from Nadya, he placed his hands on the ground and released a blast of fire beneath his feet, rocketing him up into the air and landing on the ship. Finally, everyone was on the ship and they escaped the Barren Wastelands.
