Machine Story
Chapter 11
The Mission
Now that Niall, Anusha, and Kaviya were back in the laboratory, David was ready to share the information he had received from Siri. He started to explain about some coordinates but it made no sense to anyone in the room. “Hey David, maybe if you could grant me access to the computer I can show everyone the data!” Siri spoke to David. “Great idea, but uh, how do I do that?” He asked out loud.
Unfortunately, no one else could hear Siri’s voice so Niall, Anusha, and Kaviya all gave a blank stare at David as if he was some crazy person talking to himself. David felt very embarrassed and Siri was laughing. “Siri!” He yelled. After she had her fill of laughter, she told David to walk towards the computer in the lab. “Okay, you should be able to connect your system with the computer.”
David looked at his hand and began to focus on his right index finger. It transformed into an auxiliary cord, which allowed him to place it into the port of the computer. From there, Siri was able to transfer the data she had found onto the screen. It was showing a red blinking dot, highlighting a very specific coordinate on a map.
“So what is this showing exactly?” Niall asked. Suddenly, Siri's voice was heard through the speakers of the computer. It startled everyone except David. “Who in the Phosphorus are you?!” yelled Anusha. David took a moment to calm everyone down and introduce everyone to his AI.
“Oh, so you weren’t just talking to yourself earlier. You aren’t crazy then?” Kaviya asked skeptically. “Oh don’t worry, you had the right idea, he is definitely crazy,” Siri added. David was beginning to get frustrated and slammed the computer, indicating for everyone to get back on track.
“As I was saying earlier, I’m not completely sure what these coordinates mean but I found them hidden in the Metadross memory banks.” She informed them. As she was speaking, Anusha began typing on the keyboard to conduct some quick research. After a few minutes had passed, she believed she had an answer for the group.
After running through the data on the computer, Anusha had a hunch that the coordinate could be the location of the Metadross base. Upon hearing that information, David jumped to his feet and suggested that they could mount an attack against their opponent. Anusha really thought David was crazy now and immediately objected to the idea.
“Listen I know it sounds rash, but we can’t just stay on defense. The Metadross aren’t going to stop and eventually, they will breakthrough with their countless numbers.” David challenged. Anusha still didn’t agree and turned to Niall for support. To her dismay, Niall took a moment to gather his thought before speaking, “The kid has a point…”
Anusha facepalmed herself in disgust but Niall elaborated. He proposed that a small team would venture out toward the coordinate to gather more information about the area. Once they had a better idea of what was in the area, they could reassess their options. “And who would be on this team exactly?” Anusha asked. Niall looked at David and then back at Anusha with a big smile, “Why me and the newbie of course!”
“Wait, just the two of us?” David asked for clarity. “Oh? You were super gung-ho a couple of minutes ago. Did you suddenly change your mind?” Niall inquired. David clenched both his fists and accepted the challenge. “Great! We leave first thing tomorrow morning. Get a good sleep and I’ll see you tomorrow at 5 am sharp.” Niall immediately left the laboratory after those parting words and everyone else followed.
