The Journey Begins: Nightmare of a Foe

The next day had arrived, and after all the preparation and training, the team of four: Armaan, Chloe, Da-Wei, and Zaid were ready and equipped to head out beyond the city. They were seen off at the gate by everyone who had helped them in their time at ‘The Relevant.’ General Corrin, Major Sam, Colonel, Justine, Captain Michelle, and Techy Rashmi. They assured the four that they would hold off any invasions that came their way as they placed their hopes on the team to complete their mission. With that, the squad departed through the gates of the city and ventured into the unknown wilds.

They spent the first day of their journey traveling through the fields to enter into the Forbidden Forest. By the time they reached the forest, the sun was setting and night was approaching soon. They decided to set up camp for the night before continuing the next day. To keep each other company, they gathered around the campfire sharing stories:

Zaid: … and bam! Big Z comes in and saves everyone from annihilation keeping the city safe once again! The end!

Chloe: That was an adequate story.

Da-Wei: Not even a 4/10.

Zaid: Hey I want to see you try telling a story Da-Wei!

Chloe: Armaan, have you got any good stories? I’m bad at explaining things and well, we all know Da-Wei isn’t too strong on words. (receives glare from Da-Wei)

Armaan: Well not sure if this is a story but I have always wondered what was in this Forbidden Forest. I read from the books in the library that in this forest exist some of the most dangerous and terrifying pokemon that people have never seen in years. There was a pokemon known as Clefable that was highly sought after pokemon because of its rarity. Some wondered if it was a pokemon that came from space. As people began to search for Clefables, their home on the mountain became invaded by humans. The Clefable were too kind in nature to fight back and defend their territory from the human intruders. However, overtime, their anger and resentment against the humans built up. All that negative energy within each Clefable began to build up and channel through into their shadow creating a pokemon of terror, Gengar. This pokemon was filled with rage and vengeance, tormenting trainers that had overtaken the Clefable’s home through their dreams or physically hurting them. However, after successfully scaring the invaders away, the Gengar were unsatisfied and they dispersed throughout the land. Some have rumored to have found a home here in the Forbidden Forest and could be the reason for some of the ‘missing people.’

Zaid: Guys can we sleep with the campfire on tonight?

Da-Wei: Zaid, it's just a story…

Chloe: Come on Big Z, I thought you were going to save everyone from ‘unknown terror.’

After a few more minutes of poking fun at Zaid, they began to set up a system to have someone on guard while the other three rested. Armaan was on watch for the first hour, while the other three began to rest.

As Armaan stood watch, his mind began to wander about the journey that was ahead. Suddenly, the ground began to shake violently and Armaan rushed to his teammates to wake them up. Each of them were slow to rise, wondering whose turn it was to take watch. In their confusion, a massive creature emerged breaking through the trees, it was the giant Tyranitar.

Upon seeing the pokemon, everyone jumped to attention preparing themselves for battle. Zaid was about to throw out his pokemon but the beast slammed his tail and sent Zaid flying and hitting full impact against a tree. Chloe attempted to counter attack but the Tyrantiar stomped the ground causing a wave of stone to spike from the ground hitting Chloe with a critical ‘stone edge’ attack. Witnessing the events that transpired, Da-Wei stormed in a rage towards the monster only to receive a forceful ‘thunder punch’ that sent a major shock through his entire body. All that was left was Armaan, who was holding the pokeball in his hand. However, seeing his three teammates incapacitated, he feared his pokemon would suffer the same fate. Despite his feelings, Greninja forced itself out of the pokeball and dashed right at its foe with its ‘Night Slash’ ready to strike. However, before it could make contact, the Tyranitar fired a point blank ‘Hyper Beam’ blasting Greninja to the ground with near fatal wounds.

Armaan looked around to see Da-Wei, Chloe, Zaid, and even Greninja all lying on the ground all immobilized. The Tyranitar now stood near Armaan looking down at it’s final target. Filled with despair, Armaan looked up to see the titan pokemon releasing a ‘Hyper Beam’ towards him. Without any resistance, he stood still and allowed the attack to finish him as well.

“It's not working! Nothing is working! He won’t wake up!” Zaid shouted in panic. “Here let me try. Special Move: Chloe Chaotic Chop!” She yelled with enthusiasm as she struck Armaan on the elbow. Finally he was awakened from his nightmare and was brought up to speed about what was going on.

Zaid explained, “I couldn’t fall asleep all night because of that story you shared in the evening. Then suddenly I heard a noise, it was you falling to the ground sleeping, then Chloe and Da-Wei were yelling and screaming in agony in their sleep. So I attempted to wake you guys up but before I could the Gengar over there looked ready to attack me so I threw out Blastoise to stall for time while I woke each of you up. Right now Da-Wei and Blastoise are doing their best to hold off the pokemon, until Chloe and I got you up.”

Armaan looked over to where Da-Wei and Zaid’s Blastoise were defending themselves against a dark looking pokemon. It took him time to process what they were up against in the dark. Zaid was mistaken, that the pokemon attacking them was not a Gengar. He couldn’t believe the pokemon he saw but he identified it as Darkrai, the legendary pokemon that lulls people/pokemon to an eternal sleep by putting them into a never ending nightmare.

Darkrai fired a dark pulse from its hand, hitting both Da-Wei and Blastoise. While they were both picking themselves back up, Darkrai attempted to launch a consecutive strike but Armaan threw Greninja into the fray and used its ‘water shuriken’ to interrupt Darkrai’s attack. Quickly Armaan, Chloe and Zaid rushed to Da-Wei and Blastoise to find out they were okay. The major question remained thought, how were they going to defeat the legendary for before them.

Thankfully, Armaan remembered a lot from what he had been reading and told everyone that Darkrai’s weaknesses were fighting, fairy, and bug attacks. The only problem was neither Blastoise or Greninja knew any of those types of attacks. Without any better ideas, Da-Wei pounded his fists together, “Weak to fighting eh? Let’s just do it the old school way!” He charged forward towards Darkrai with Greninja and Chloe following him closely behind. Upon seeing the three targets, Darkrai shot three ‘shadow ball’ attacks. In response, Zaid called Blastoise to use ‘hydro pump’ which neutralizes Darkrai’s attacks. Then all three fighters came within striking distance of their target but before they could attack, Darkrai released a dark pulse emitting from its body sending the three attackers falling back onto the ground.

Before they could collect themselves, Darkrai followed up with another barrage of ‘shadow balls.’ Armaan quickly intercepted the attacks coming at Greninja by blocking them with his shield. Da-Wei managed to fire off an electric pulse from both his gauntlets to negate the incoming barrage coming at himself and Chloe. Upon seeing Da-Wei’s attack, an idea came into Armaan’s mind that could possibly stop their opponent. However, before he was able to share his plan, Darkrai launched its signature attack ‘Dark Void.’

Seeing Darkrai charging up to use the attack, Armaan warned everyone to avoid the attack at all cost. ‘Dark Void’ appeared as a giant dark sphere moving to engulf its targets. It was close to tagging Chloe, Zaid, and Da-Wei within its radius but thankfully, Blastoise used its water cannons to fire a power surge of water to push them out of harm’s way. Unfortunately in doing so, Blastoise made contact with the dark sphere and instantly he fell into a deep sleep filled with nightmares.

In desperation, Armaan quickly explained the idea he had to combat their legendary foe. Da-Wei was skeptical of the idea but Chloe was all on board for it, while Zaid wished he thought of the plan. They dispersed from one another in order to set up their attack. Chloe ran head first yelling at Darkrai to draw its attention toward her. Darkrai focused and readied its hands, charging up for an attack. As Darkrai was about to strike, Greninja from a distance threw ‘water shurikens’ as it ran around the pokemon. Darkrai blocked the water shurikens with ease regardless of which direction they came from. That bought enough time for Chloe to close the gap and deliver a forceful punch as the creature. However, Darkrai was too quick, it grabbed Chloe’s fist with his hands and slammed her to the ground.

Darkrai was ready to strike Chloe again but a random rock thrown by Zaid hit it on the head. In rage, Darkrai released a quick ‘dark pulse’ from its right hand. Zaid began running to escape the hit but it was too fast and locked on to him. Thankfully Armaan was quick enough to jump in and block the attack but the exploding impact sent him falling on Zaid. Darkrai turned its attention back at Chloe but Greninja rushed in full speed in an attempt to save her. That was when it used its final attack, “Ominous Wind” releasing a gale force wind and throwing Greninja back up into the air. To make matters worse, Ominous Wind also increased Darkrai’s speed, attacks, and defenses.

The situation looked dire, Armaan and Zaid were running out of steam, Blastoise trapped in a nightmare, Chloe lying beneath the enemy and Greninja was still up in the air. The only one left standing with the will to fight it seemed was Da-Wei. Darkrai began to move towards its last remaining foe. It slowly floated its way toward Da-Wei who was just standing still, not even looking to defend himself. When Darkrai moved within range, Armaan yelled, “ALRIGHT NOW!” That signaled Greninja to release a hydro pump from up in the air right at Darkrai. Even though it saw the attack coming, it decided not to dodge, confident that its increased power could easily resist the attack but that was when Da-Wei combined the hydro pump with his electrical pulse.

The fusion attack landed a direct hit and not only that, the electrical pulse left a paralyzing effect on its left arm. Greninja fired one last fury of water shurikens but once again Darkrai deflected it all away with its right arm. Little did Darkrai know, everything was to set the stage of one final strike from Da-Wei.His gauntlets were fully charged and he slammed both his palms onto the ground creating a giant electrical current. Darkrai finally realized what happened to his surroundings, the entire area around him was wet from all the water shurikens that it blocked. It attempted to fly away but Chloe quit pretending to be unconscious and grabbed the Darkrai to prevent it from escaping. The electrical strike amplified by all the water struck both Chloe and Darkrai. Out of the aftermath, Darkrai was on the floor with its eyes closed with Chloe lying down nearby.

They all rushed to Chloe holding their breath that she was fine. She stood still for awhile then suddenly opened her eyes and gave them a thumbs up with her famous line, “I’m okay!” only to fall back to sleep from exhaustion. For the most part, all went according to plan as the suit was able to absorb most of the electrical damage from their big attack. Zaid went to call back Blastoise to his pokeball while Da-Wei and Greninja combined to carry Chloe while she was sleeping. As they were about to head out they heard movement near them. They looked back and they couldn’t believe what they were seeing, the Darkrai was back up and fully conscious.

The team was in disbelief but more importantly they didn't have much energy left. They could run but wouldn’t get far and they knew they couldn’t stay around to battle any longer. The choices were few and as the Darkrai was readying to attack, a light began to shine from afar. Dawn was approaching and Darkrai could sense its power diminishing as the day neared. It took one last glance at its opponents before disappearing into the forest.
