Chapter 24
Sheer Cold
Jawad was frantically moving from rock to rock, trying to locate the one the great wizard was encased in. Maggie was doing her best to hold off Kabir who had just appeared to stop them from reviving the great wizard. The pirate threw a barrage of smoke bombs to keep the ice mage’s vision restricted. She knew she had to keep her distance and wait for an opportunity to ambush him.
The smoke didn’t affect his breathing much, but it did tremendously slow down his efforts to find his targets. Kabir began releasing a few ice blasts from his hand but missed with all his attempts. Maggie slowly maneuvered around the smoke without Kabir seeing her. When she had Kabir’s back facing her, she pounced forward with her cutlass in hand to surprise her opponent. Unfortunately, a giant ice pillar appeared between Kabir and Maggie, blocking her preemptive strike.
Once the attack had failed, Kabir turned around and held his hand in front of Maggie. Suddenly, Maggie’s feet began to freeze, and it was slowly moving up towards her body. Kabir was planning to slowly encase the pirate in ice, but once the ice reached her knees, Riya the monkey jumped onto Kabir’s head and pulled his hair.
Kabir was now preoccupied with a monkey on his head allowing Maggie to break the ice on her lower body. She managed to break free and immediately made a charge towards Kabir while Riya was still annoying him. Once she was about seven feet from striking distance, the ice mage grabbed a hold of Riya’s tail and tossed her to the ground. He then fired a bolt of ice to trap the monkey to the ground.
Maggie was within striking distance, lunging forward with her weapon to take down the enemy. It was a desperate attempt, but it wasn’t enough as Kabir side stepped the attack and grabbed her wrist and pushed her to the ground. He then froze her torso to the ground preventing her from escaping.
Kabir had his hand ready to cast an ice spear to finish Maggie off but once again he was interrupted, this time by a rock thrown at his forehead. He turned his attention to face the culprit who threw it, and he was met with Jiyah and Nadya who had arrived to save the day.
“If you are here then that means you must have beaten Cole.” He assumed. “Ha, pathetic! Guess I have to finish you all myself.” Immediately after finishing his sentence, Kabir began firing bolts of ice at his new target. Jiyah and Nadya quickly found cover behind all the pillars of stone. They knew they had to somehow find a way to get in close in order to have any chance of winning.
Kabir kept applying pressure, but the two girls were patient. They just need one opportunity to make their attack work. It took a couple minutes but Nadya found the chance to jump out of cover and start charging toward the ice mage. Kabir seeing the oncoming threat fired a barrage of icicles that Nadya managed to deflect away with her swords. Unable to slow her advance with projectiles, he switched to aiming his ice magic on the ground, covering the floor around Nadya’s feet with ice.
Nadya stopped before she stepped onto the ice but she had nowhere to run. Kabir charged up his magic to finish Nadya off but this was the chance they were waiting for. Nadya dug her swords onto the ground and stuck out both her hands with her palms open. Jiyah began running towards Nadya and when she was within reach, Jiyah stepped onto Nadya’s hands and she boosted Jiyah into the air.
Having never seen such a crazy strategy, Kabir was caught off guard and Jiyah was descending from the air with her right fist out. Unfortunately, Kabir was able to react at the last second and cast a small ice shield to mitigate the impact of Jiyah’s punch. In retaliation, he grabbed Jiyah’s arm and threw her aside.
Seeing Jiyah in trouble, Nadya quickly pulled out both her swords from the ground but Kabir fired a blast of ice at her feet, preventing her from running anywhere. He now stood over Jiyah, ready to finish her, but suddenly, a bunch of smoke bombs rolled beneath the ice wizard’s feet and released a blanket of smoke on the battlefield.
Maggie had broken free from the ice with Reina’s help. She was the one who threw the smoke bombs to save Jiyah and Nadya from Kabir. The ice wizard found himself in a predicament with his vision restricted once again. Maggie, Jiyah, and Nadya used the smokescreen as cover to get positioning on their opponent.
All three of them were set and ready to pounce on their enemy simultaneously but the ice wizard was finally fed up with playing games. He unleashed an ice nova that hit Maggie, Jiyah, and Nadya, sending them to the ground. The nova also cleared the air of all the smoke and turned the ground around them to ice.
“No more games! I will finish you all right now!” He cried out in anger. Kabir ready his attack, looking to his first victim, Nadya. He aimed his magic at the sword girl but a shield came flying in, smacking him in the gut, forcing his icy magic to miss Nadya.
Leyyah had joined the fray and she continued her assault by running straight at the ice mage. As she ran up to Kabir, she picked up her shield and bashed it against his torso. She then followed up by driving her sword right at him but the ice mage managed to cast an ice shield to block the heavy strike.
Everyone was relieved to see Leyyah, especially Nadya. It brought their spirits up and allowed them to fight on.
Things were starting to go against Kabir. Although he had part of Dragkonis’s power and was far stronger than them, he was having trouble finishing them off. With Leyyah standing in front, the girls all got back up and stood tall behind her. Kabir looked worried for the first time, but that was not all, a loud cracking noise was heard from behind the girls.
